Spanish 106A Spanish for the Health Professions
Offered every fall and spring semester
Students will explore the issues related to access to health care providers for the Latino community in the US. The cultural issues, medical practices, and linguistic interactions between the health professionals and the patients will be discussed. Students are required to participate in a 20-hour service-learning experience with the Durham Latino community during the semester. Students are exposed to community issues, applied research, and prepare a research proposal informed by the service experience. Permission of instructor required.
Spanish 106E Latino/a Voices in Duke, Durham, and Beyond
Offered every fall and spring semester
This course explores current cultural, political, and social issues related to the construction and representation of Latino/a identity and community formation within a local and global context. Students are required to participate in a 20-hour service-learning experience with the Durham Latino community during the semester. Students are exposed to community issues, applied research and prepare a research proposal informed by the service experience. Recommended that students take a 100-level Spanish course prior to enrolling in this course. Permission of instructor required.
