Spanish 002: Elementary Spanish 002
This course builds on the elements of the language acquired in Elementary Spanish 001; enrollment in this course presupposes acquisition of the contents included in that course. Speaking, reading, and writing skills emphasized; exposure to some aspects of Spanish-speaking cultures an important component. Classes conducted entirely in Spanish, using a communicative approach. This course meets 5 times a week.Prerequisites: Spanish 001 at Duke.
Spanish 063: Intermediate Spanish
This course builds on the elements of the language acquired in the elementary sequence; enrollment in this course presupposes acquisition of Spanish 001 and 002 contents. Continued development of the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Expanding range and complexity of grammar usage and vocabulary. Exposure to some aspects of Spanish-speaking cultures. Increasing ability to express ideas in speaking and writing in an original manner. Spanish 063 meets 3 times a week.Prerequisites: Spanish 002 or 014 at Duke.
Spanish 076: Advanced Intermediate Spanish
This course builds on the elements of the language acquired in Spanish 001-063. Further development of the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Expanding range and sophistication of grammar usage and vocabulary. Exposure to some aspects of Spanish-speaking cultures. Increasing ability to structure ideas in speaking and writing. Work with comprehension and production of texts of greater extension. Prepares students for 100-level Spanish courses. Spanish 076 meets 3 times a week.Prerequisites: Spanish 063 at Duke.
Spanish 101: Advanced Spanish Writing
Development of composition skills related to expository and other forms of writing, focus on techniques for organizing information, vocabulary, editing, revising, rewriting and grammatical accuracy. Substantial work on the development of writing strategies through several short papers and a final long paper. This course is strongly recommended before enrollment in literature classes in Spanish. Spanish 101 meets 3 times a week.Prerequisites: Spanish 076 at Duke or SAT II of 660 or higher, or an AP Spanish Literature score of 4 or 5 and/or an AP Spanish Language of 5.
Note: This course counts towards the Writing requirement. Students may not enroll if they have previously taken both 104 and 105.
Spanish 104: Advanced Spanish Grammar
This course is intended to foster students' reflection about Spanish grammar, and to consolidate students' knowledge of the system of rules underlying the Spanish language. Using both inductive and deductive approaches, forms and uses will be presented and practiced through controlled and communicative exercises. Special attention will be given to grammar in oral and written communication. This course meets 3 times a week.Prerequisites: Spanish 076 at Duke, or SAT II of 660 or higher, or an AP Spanish Literature score of 4 or 5 and/or an AP Spanish Language of 5.
Note: This course does not count towards the Spanish major nor towards the minor, and students may not enroll if they have previously taken both 101 and 105.
Spanish 105: Spanish for Oral Communication
Development of effective strategies for oral communication. Use of language ranges from informal to formal situations and concrete to abstract topics. Focus on developing structured arguments and increasing linguistic accuracy. Some sections use materials from Latin America and others use materials from Spain. This course meets 3 times a week. NOT OPEN TO NATIVE SPEAKERS OF SPANISH.Prerequisites: Spanish 76 at Duke, or SAT II of 660 or higher, or an AP Spanish Literature score of 4 or 5 and/or an AP Spanish Language of 5.

Spanish 105: Spanish for Oral Communication

This advanced Spanish service-learning course focuses on the development of oral proficiency in the Spanish language. The course will expand your knowledge of Spanish speaking communities through an in-depth exploration of Latin American and US Latino cultural, political, economic, and historical issues. In addition to the community service, contemporary articles, short texts, television clips, videos, web sites, etc., will serve as resources for the course. Speaking and listening skills will be refined through vocabulary development, group and individual presentations, video recordings, and debates. The course is designed to practice effective strategies for oral communication and to prepare the student to use his/her language to discuss a range of issues, from everyday, personal topics to abstract concepts. Service learning will provide students with opportunities to increase (or establish) their involvement with the Latino community, encourage sensitivity to diversity, provide real-life examples for critical thinking and analysis, and offer opportunities for personal growth and leadership. Students are expected to enter this course with an Intermediate level of proficiency as established in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines-Speaking. This course will provide activities to develop and practice skills as outlined in the Advanced and Superior levels of proficiency.Prerequisites: Spanish 76 at Duke, or SAT II of 660 or higher, or an AP Spanish Literature score of 4 or 5 and/or an AP Spanish Language of 5.

Spanish 106A: Spanish for Health Professions
Research Service-Learning: Gateway
Offered every semester
This course increases students’ linguistic and cultural competence associated with the health profession. In this course, students develop an understanding of how socio-cultural elements, such as level of education, country of origin, and gender shape the linguistic interaction between the health professionals and the patients. The research service-learning component of this course enhances the academic experience through structured reflection opportunities and analysis of students’ experience in the community. Students are expected to complete 20 hours of service work. By the end of this course students should have finalize a research question whose ultimate goal is to analyze and understand either institutional structures, public policies or social attitudes. The linguistic component of the course includes development of a lexical repertoire in the health field, development of discourse strategies to successfully interact with members of the Latino community in Durham, and development of an understanding of linguistic variation as seen in oral and written communication.
Prerequisites: Spanish 076 or or SAT II of 660 or higher, or an AP Spanish Literature score of 4 or 5 and/or an AP Spanish Language of 5. Consent of instructor required.

Spanish 106C: Issues of Education and Immigration
Research Service-Learning: Stage II

This advanced Spanish language course is within the Research Service Learning at Duke: Scholarship with a Civic Mission Program. As a Stage II course it provides a community-based research opportunity that includes field research which students conduct in collaboration with Durham Public Schools. Our in-class discussions as well as our research will include topics of: bilingualism, Latino identity, access to education for immigrants, academic performance (motivation for achievement and drop-out rates), assimilation, general pressures of family and peers (i.e. gang activity). As well as participating in class sessions on-campus students will spend up to 20 hours outside of class in service at Jordan High School in Durham (both in volunteer service and research). Students will assist ESL and sheltered-content course teachers during the school day or will volunteer as after-school tutors for Spanish-speaking students. The results of the project will be presented to Durham Public Schools at the end of the semester.

What does it mean to speak Spanish in the United States? This course will provide an in-depth analysis of specific themes related to applied linguistics, sociolinguistics and second language acquisition and teaching. The focus of the course will develop students’ skills in collecting and analyzing linguistic data, framing, and testing hypotheses.
